Hiking Mount Amos – Tasmania

Hiking Mount Amos – Tasmania

Distance: 2.5 miles (4 km) roundtrip

Elevation Gain: ~1,400 ft (436 m)

Duration: 3 hours roundtrip

Difficulty: Semi-difficult

Do not attempt this hike during or after rainfall or if the ground is wet for whatever reason, because you will slip and fall.

Mt Amos has got to be one of the coolest hikes I’ve ever done. It is not long in distance, but the variety of the terrain will take you some time to get to the top. There’s parts where you’re pretty much rock climbing to the top and it’s pretty epic, but borderline scary. The trail is very well marked with yellow arrows so you don’t have to worry about getting lost.

The Hike

Starting at the parking lot, you’ll see a map of the trail and head right of the map.

Then you’ll see a sign to go to the left to take the Mt. Amos trail.

It starts off pretty easy, just a gradual climb through trees.

You’ll start to get a pretty good view of the bay and then you’ll see a sign that warns you not to attempt this hike in damp conditions. Listen to this sign.

You’ll see the first hump of granite rock that you’ll have to climb up. It’s not too difficult. Once you get up that you’ll see a pretty breathtaking view.

You’ll continue hiking up the granite rock. Look at how shiny that ground looks. Hence why you shouldn’t attempt it in the rain.

Keep going. It’s starting to get steeper.

And now the fun part begins! Doesn’t it pretty much look like it’s 90 degrees vertical? It felt like I was rock climbing, so it was pretty cool that I could leverage some of the skills and techniques I learned during indoor rock climbing.

This is what the view looked like when I looked back. Beautiful isn’t it.

Once you get past that steep climb, you have another maybe 10 minutes of easy walking to get to the top.

Voila, you’re here! The first look of Wineglass Bay. Beautiful isn’t it! There’s lots of space at the top for you to lounge around, have a picnic, and enjoy the view. My friends and I attempted to see if we could walk down to Wineglass Bay through the trees, but it’s pretty much not possible because there’s no trail and too many trees, so don’t attempt that. You’ll have to hike down the way you came.

Overall, an awesome hike and I totally recommend it!
